Dallow Lock Trent And Mersey Canal
After setting off from The Dragon pub in Willington, Dallow Lock was the first of a great many locks we would have to deal with.

One of my favourite stop off points on the Trent and Mersey Canal is the stunning Branston Water Park. A lovely circular walk around the lake takes about 30 minutes and is a very relaxing way to end the day and unwind.

Canal And River Trust Shop And Information
Small shop and information centre at Fradley Junction run by the friendly and helpful staff of the Canal & River Trust. I have nothing but admiration for the people who work for this organisation, many of them volunteers who so far I have always found helpful and friendly and committed to the work they do.

A Boater At Fradley Junction
Places to moor at this very popular location can sometimes be in short supply requiring boaters to manoeuvre their boats in and out of tight spaces.

Mooring A Boat At Fradley Junction
Canal boats can be very cumbersome at times especially when trying to manoeuvre them into a tight space. This fortunate boater has a helping hand but many boaters like myself have to do it all on our own making for some interesting and occasionally entertaining efforts to control the boat in difficult situations. Fortunately because of the very slow movement of canal boats, most situations can be resolved with a bit of patience and calm controlled throttle and tiller movements.

The Laughing Duck Canalside Cafe
A great place to call in for coffee and food is this lovely and very popular cafe at Fradley Junction. The place is run by friendly helpful staff and provides excellent food and coffee at very reasonable prices. I make a point of visiting this place every time I pass through Fradley Junction.

Lock On The East Side Of Fradley Junction
After much effort usually quite late in the day getting through a number of locks in succession, the motivating factor is the knowledge of either The Swan Pub or The Laughing Duck cafe where I can get a lovely refreshment and relax with a stroll around the beautiful nature reserve with my dog.

Polesworth Abbey And Church Of St Editha
The 9th Century Abbey which was founded by St Modwena and King Egbert is a "Scheduled Ancient Monument" although very little is visible of the original buildings as they were dismantled by Francis Goodere of St Albans to provide stone for a new manor house. Frances Goodere was granted the Abbey by Henry VIII following the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536. The 12th Century Church of St Editha is what can be seen today and the location is home of a number of Commonwealth war graves.

Walking Along The Coventry Canal
Brenda May was a boat full of character and interesting decor. I love the huge variety of boats and individualism of so many people on the canal. They are often people who turn to boating to live a life feeling more free from the expectations and demands of living a life on land and fitting in with modern society.

A Tiny Boat On The Coventry Canal
I love these tiny little boats. I always think it must be a very unique character who can make a boat so small his or her home. I have seen a number of these boats with people living aboard full time. One day I would love to have a look inside one but as I pass them by I will just imagine how people can mange living in a space so small on a full time basis.

Historic Building At Hawkesbury Junction
Hawkesbury Junction is the scene of one of the most controversial points on the canal network due to the Coventry and Oxford canals being owned by separate companies who bitterly fought over the collection of tolls.

Ponies At Ansty
Slowly cruising along the canal I was met by a large herd of ponies all gathered at the waters edge probably looking for the occasional carrot or apple from a passing narrowboat. No such look from me as i'm all out of fresh fruit and veg so they'll have to get on with chewing the grass.
